Why is My Garage Door Stuck?

It’s one of those problems that always seems to happen at the worst time, you’re rushing out the door to get the kids to hockey practice, you hit the garage door opener… and nothing happens. A stuck garage door is more than just an inconvenience, it can leave you stranded or even compromise your home’s security. But don’t worry, you’re not alone, and we’re here to help you get to the bottom of it.

Before you call in a pro or start poking around with tools, it helps to understand why your garage door might be stuck. There are a few common reasons, and with a little troubleshooting, you might be able to spot the problem yourself.

Common Reasons Your Garage Door Gets Stuck

1. Misaligned Tracks

One of the top culprits? Tracks that are out of line. These metal rails guide your door up and down—and if they shift even a little, your door can get stuck, grind, or move unevenly. Misalignment can be caused by wear and tear, poor installation, or even a bump from a car or lawnmower. If your door looks crooked or jerky when it moves, this could be the issue.

2. Something’s Blocking the Track

It doesn’t take much to jam things up – leaves, small debris, or even built-up dirt can stop the rollers in their tracks. Check the rails for anything that might be blocking the way, and give them a good wipe-down if needed. Keeping them clean is an easy way to prevent this problem.

3. Worn or Broken Rollers

Rollers do a lot of heavy lifting – literally. Over time, they can wear down, crack, or even pop out of the track. When that happens, your garage door might drag, shake, or stop moving altogether. A quick visual inspection can help you spot if one of these little wheels needs replacing.

4. Trouble With the Opener

Sometimes, the door’s not the problem, it’s the opener. If the motor’s struggling, the gears are worn, or the safety sensors are misaligned, the opener might not be able to lift the door properly. In some cases, the opener might work fine but just isn’t powerful enough for a heavy or oversized door.

5. Weather Woes

Believe it or not, the weather can have a big impact on your garage door. In the depth of a Winnipeg winter, grease can thicken and moving parts can stiffen. In summer, metal parts can expand from the heat. And year-round, humidity can cause rust and corrosion on tracks or hinges. If your door tends to get stuck during certain seasons, temperature could be playing a role.

Safety First: What to Do Before You Try to Fix It

We get it, it’s tempting to dive right in and try to fix the problem. But garage doors are very heavy, and the springs that lift them are under a ton of tension. That means they can be dangerous if you’re not sure what you’re doing.

Here are a few safety tips before you get started:

  • Disconnect the Opener:
Pull the red emergency release handle (usually hanging from the opener rail). This lets you move the door manually, and keeps the opener from accidentally engaging while you’re working.
  • Move the Door Carefully:
If you’re manually opening or closing the door, take it slow. Make sure it’s secure and won’t slam shut unexpectedly.
  • Wear the Right Gear:
Heavy-duty gloves protect your hands, goggles shield your eyes, and sturdy boots keep your feet safe. Avoid loose clothing or jewelry, and tie back long hair.
  • Know When to Call a Pro:
If the problem involves springs, cables, or anything that looks intimidating, don’t risk it. These parts can cause serious injuries if mishandled. Call a trained technician instead.
